With the presence of Christmas so near, it’s only fair that we started to give out a few more presents. The attendees of Friday night’s GeekOut Bristol meet would be very aware of the presents that were being handed out; if people took part in our competition which was absolutely packed, they were all in with a chance of getting a present. All they had to do was answer one question correctly… Unfortunately, I was the one who made the questions, which proved to be pretty tricky. Still, there were Santa hats and more this past Friday, so check out what happened at our fun little event!
We always love to share how our events went, especially when we had a genuinely excellent time all around. We went to the Old Market Tavern, many of us braving the incredibly unpredictable weather of the day (I would know, I was drenched). We gathered in the pub, bought a pint or two, or ten – and we met plenty of new people and familiar faces alike. Whilst we don’t have too many pictures of this one, the competition was awesome and as ever, we’ll detail what happened at the event. So, check out what happens at one of our GeekOut Bristol Meets.
Books; eBooks; Writing; Written word. That’s what we’re going to celebrate, as we get together for a night of fun and games, with a twist using literature. As this month will be NaNoWriMo, or National Novel Writing Month, we figured we should create our own story… More on that in this month’s competition. Read on to join us for another exciting GeekOut Bristol Meet!
FOODIE PRE-MEET TBC (TBC):
As ever, we love a good nomming session before GeekOut Bristol Meet, so please check back soon and we’ll have the pre-meetup poll go live. We’ll publish the Pre-Meetup poll on Facebook tomorrow (Saturday 27th).
MAIN EVENT: 14:00-Midnight (Old Market Tavern)
I love a good story, but all good stories have a beginning, a middle and an end. Ours happens to have a prequel with our pre-meetup, however we’re going to have a night of gaming, as well as chatting about various novels and pieces of prose.
Food & drink can NOT be brought in with you to the Old Market Tavern. If you are caught with food and drink on the premises, you will be asked to leave until you’ve disposed of your food or drink.
There will be a food menu at Old Market Tavern in the evening! The food is cheap and it’s delicious – usually available from 6pm.
Final note: If you are asked for ID by the bar staff, we will not vouch for your age – You must provide ID.
BOARD GAMES (& a dash of video games)
As always, we’ll have a large selection of board games available, so please do check out what we have:
– Bears vs Babies
– Bucket of Doom
– Cards Against Humanity (UK Edition + Expansions 1, 2 and 3)
– Cash n Guns
– Exploding Kittens
– Harry Potter Trivial Pursuit
– Jungle Speed
– Love Letter
– Pokemon Monopoly
– Rogues to Riches
– Star Trek Settlers of Catan
– Three Wishes
– Unusual Suspects
– Zombie Munchkin
AND MANY MORE!
We won’t be bringing every game listed above with us: If there’s a specific game you want to see, please let me know in the comments below.
A new game will be brought along if possible. Once we know what it is, we’ll announce it in the comments of our Facebok and Meetup pages.
COSPLAYERS (Group Cosplay Picture: 9pm)
Naturally, some of your favourite characters come to life on pages, so why not share your love of these characters by physically bringing them to life. All cosplayers are welcome, as always.
*CHANGING FACILITIES* If you want to change into a costume when here, please note there are no changing facilities. There are just standard toilet cubicles – Which are fine to change in, but you might want to consider this first.
COMPETITION: Written Insult-Off (8pm-9pm judging, 9pm results)
We do love a good bit of writing, but one thing we like even more is a good bit of crass humour. Pick up your quill and parchment, for you’re going to write up to 1 A4 page of insults. The funniest and most insulting wins, but, please note the following:
> No homophobia, no racism, no sexism, no disablism, no ageism and no ideology bashing. That’s not cool (and you can do better than that).
> Make it as insulting as you want, but we’re going to critique these on how -funny- these insults are… However, there are three criteria:
– Humour (Sure, this is subjective, but I’ll be pulling up a small panel, where the funniest two we each find will be pulled forward and judged to whittle it down to the final three.)
– Legibility (We’ve gotta be able to read it easily! If you have ‘bad handwriting’, don’t let this put you off. Feel free to type it up before hand, if you’d prefer but you’ll need to print it!)
– Word complexity (you may use ye olde English, should that suit you)
Please note that anyone can begin writing their entries before attending the meetup.
1st: £25 Cash, a GeekOut Poster
2nd: £15 Cash, a GeekOut Poster
3rd: £10 Cash, a GeekOut Poster
All entries that I can read will be gathered up and turned into a free eBook, exclusive to you guys. Aren’t I nice?
As for the physical prizes:
- Stephen King’s On Writing – A great primer for writers and aspiring writers which, honestly, I learned a lot from.
- A Fancy Leather Journal – Great for when you need to write on the go
- Paperback Card Game – A game that encourages your to use your words!
These are subject to change, but hopefully they’ll stay this way!
As part of our commitment to being a great night out, we do not discriminate based upon age (although our age requirement is venue policy), disability, gender, race, religion or sexuality. If at any point you feel you need to speak to someone about another’s actions, please grab the host (Timlah) and we’ll sort it out!
So what are you waiting for? RSVP today!
October, a month for the spooky and the macabre. A month when children dress up like the little monsters they are, whilst asking for sugar to make them even more energetic. However, it’s not just the kids who get into the spirit of Halloween. Us grown adults still love a good excuse to throw a costume on and to decorate the place, making it a spooky spectacular for all involved. Yeah, alright, I didn’t have much in the way to make the place spookier, but we certainly did have the right people come along, helping us by making the place a Halloween haven – And we were just under three weeks early!
Another GeekOut Bristol Meet has come and gone, but don’t be dismayed, we’ll be back next month. Whilst there were a number of Muggles about the Old Market Tavern, the venue helped us put on a magical event. There were plenty of Hogwarts House special drinks, one for each house, as well as a returning favourite in Butterbeer. Check below for some of our pictures of the event, as well as some preliminary information about when the next one’s going to go live.
Muggles and wizards are welcome as we proudly present a Harry Potter inspired evening. Also, do come and try out the Butterbeer that’ll be at the bar. Mmm, delicious! But what more information can we give you than what we already know? Read on for some exclusive information about the event.
Also, check out our newest idea: Talk Geek To Me – A chance for people to show off what they’re geeky about. We’ve got our first hosts and first topic, so do check it out!
It was definitely a Bizarre kind of night on Friday, where the good folk who attended GeekOut Bristol Meet came up with some awesome stands to call their own. It was a quieter meetup, with the entire pub being somewhat quieter than usual, but that wasn’t a problem – It meant there was more space for us all to play some great games and have excellent conversation. Most of the attendees would likely agree that the quieter atmosphere made for a much more relaxing day, so come join us as we check out this month’s GeekOut Bristol Meet.
OH MY GOD!!
Get your stands out, it’s time for us to get ready for our very own Bizarre Adventure! With a new season of JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure coming out later this year, it’s time for us to celebrate the ripple and of course, Za Warudo!
Oh and for any of you who don’t know what we’re on about, it’s cool – Come along and enjoy our antics anyway, as it’ll be another great night of fun and games!
No matter the political climate, nor the weather, we melted our way over to the Old Market Tavern at 2pm, for another great evening. Lots of faces, both new and old, which made for an excellent night out! We saw some exceptional costumes, even if people had to change in and out of them due to the heat. Thanks to everyone who turned up and as ever, we got some snaps of the event. From the costumes to the festivities, here is what went down at GeekOut Bristol Meet this past Saturday night.
I’ve been asked a few times about how we get it done; how every month, without fail, we’ve managed to run a GeekOut Bristol Meet since 2013. How every month, I manage to get a large collection of geeks to a pub. How we manage to get people playing games, people drinking and eating together – and most importantly, how on Earth do we get such a good atmosphere? I can’t answer all of these questions (trade secrets), but if you’re looking to run your own Meetup event somewhere, perhaps this is food for thought?
