Dungeon Situational – Books and Their Secrets

Books, rich tomes of lore and knowledge, and in a world of magic, power, monsters, worse, and better, knowledge can reveal so much about the world that you can use to twist and bend to your advantage. Eldritch secrets, long forgotten treasures, and far darker mysteries abound to those with the patience to settle down and get some reading done.

As per usual, Dungeon Situational uses Dungeons & Dragons 5th edition rules but should be readily modified. It’s all just ideas to get you thinking about how to stock your own fantasy library.

Babylon 5 In Depth – Angels and Demons

Last week I discussed the alien races of Babylon 5, similarities and differences and how we’re not all that great at coming up with wholly alien life forms. Everything we create has some irrevocable grounding in what we are and what we know, and while a lot of that has a solid basis in evolutionary biology we’re still missing a little imagination at times.

There were a few races I noticeably omitted in the last in this series that stalwart fans may have wondered about (I know there’s a few die-hards reading), The First Ones. Humans are not the first to set foot among the stars, far from it. The Centauri found us first, the Minbari are the most advanced of the spacefaring species, except for the handful who came before. Remaking a Classic – Hauntings

The second favourite horror cliché after the masked slasher, must surely be the haunting. A soul reluctant to let go, a bound demon, or some other spectral force that clings to some physical entity to wreak havoc and stack chairs. It’s been done so much it’s comedic, it’s positively childish, the stuff of Scooby-Doo and slightly above average animated films.

But there’s something about a decent haunting that can deeply creep us out, and if it’s something original, something with a twist, can a haunted tale leave us unable to perceive something in the same way ever again? (more…)
