Top 10 – Ice/Snow Monsters

GeekOut Top 10s

It’s far too cold outside, but I’m still feeling warm from adrenaline – That’s probably because we’re being chased by hordes of ice and snow monsters! People fear the cold, but it is somewhat beautiful. There’s something about the seductive allure of the snow that makes you want to venture out into it… What am I talking about? I don’t wanna go out there! You never know what manner of cold creature will kill you; but we’ve created a Top 10 compendium for these Ice and Snow monsters.

Wrap up warm, folks! (more…)

Dungeon Situational – 10 Firbolgs

Growing in popularity thanks to their frequent reoccurrence in Critical Role’s second campaign, the race of gentle fey giants appearing in Volo’s Guide to Monsters are forest-dwelling wardens and guardians, living peacefully and quietly with nature until situation demands that they act to protect their sworn homes. Despite their incredible size, they are more adept in matters of stealth and ambuscade, and are better fit to silently exterminate interlopers in the night than to assault them head-on.

A quick review of firbolgs as they appear in Volo’s, they’re tough to fit into an adventuring party without some heavy modifications to narrative: they abhor greed, prefer not to leave their homes, and are generally peaceful and slow to resort to violence. They also utterly lack a physical description, but general opinion seems to lean more toward hints of the bovine, hircine, or cervine elements mixed into an oversized humanoid body.

Here I present ten ideas on how to use this race, in which I will be including a few variations on the theme, none of which will be characters from Critical Role (although some artwork from the series may appear). (more…)

Road to GenCon 2019

In the absence of a major summer anime convention, I’m finding I’m looking more for opportunities to spend time with the same old crowd I hang out with there, rather than some new big event to fill the time. However, there’s no denying that a gaping hole has been left in the Geek Calendar for 2019, and it may seem odd to take this as an opportunity, but I an item to tick off the bucket list, and next year may be the year to do it. Top 10 Merchants

GeekOut Top 10s

Merchants are crazy important, both in the real world and the fictional. However, sometimes, these merchants can’t help but spin themselves a pretty penny. They may use fanciful words, may give themselves a five-finger discount to get their wares – Or they may just charge, ahem, a small fee? Protect your wallets, folks, for these characters are out to get the contents of them. As ever, we’re Timlah and Joel and today we’re checking out our Top 10 Merchants.

Amecon 2018 – Critter Cosplaying

I have mentioned in the past that I do not Cosplay, and I made mention of it as part of my panel on confidence building, that I have accepted that it is something I am not tempted by, and that there is nothing wrong with that. I suppose now i have to rephrase that, I have a selection of options on how to update my status, all of which are true:

I don’t cosplay very often
I don’t cosplay very well
I don’t usually cosplay, but every now and then, with the right fandom, and the right crowd to tempt me in, I’ll throw something quick together.

In the build up to Amecon I’d spotted a couple of folks planning on putting together a Critical Role cosplay, and a group-meet planned for the Saturday. It was short notice, but one quick glance around my room and I realise that… actually, I had the pieces to put together a rather hasty Caleb Widogast. (more…)

Top 10 – Kleptomaniacs

GeekOut Top 10s

A kleptomaniac is someone who can’t help themselves, but to steal. Nevermind stealing your heart, these individuals will just take what they see. Really, it doesn’t matter to them – they know they need it, no matter what it is. They just have to have it. Well then, we’re going to have to tread carefully and lock all of our valuables away. Indeed, we’d better nail this Top 10 down, as this week we’re keeping an eye out for our Top 10 Kleptomaniacs.

Finally Watching Critical Role

I do my best not to make two roleplay posts in the same week (the same rule applies to film, or internet culture, or video games and so forth) but this is just a very quick post while I hastily finish my preparations for GeekOut Shrewsbury, for which I should – as you read – already being attending, and the nub of the topic is fairly self explanatory:

After a couple of years of being badgered about it – pretty much since the first month the all-star D&D game headed by Matthew Mercer – I am finally watching Critical Role by Geek and Sundry. (more…)
