GeekOut Shrewsbury – Such Plans

October’s GeekOut Shrewsbury is in only a week, and after eight months I think we are – as a group – settling into a pleasant routine that’s broadly enjoyable. A competition one month, a pub quiz the next, board games to keep us going, food, drink, and light heartedness. We average somewhere between twelve and twenty people, a mixture of regulars and new faces, enough to keep multiple games going and to leave people room to move around and socialise as they please.

So this month, it’s time to shake things up a little.

This Month

I’m asking more of my group this month than ever before. This is pub quiz month, and each month I’ll be trying to add a little more to each quiz, or at least something different, building from just a list of trivia questions that some may have considered rather cruel, a picture round added in August, keep an eye out for what’s coming this month.

Additionally I’m encouraging everyone to show up in costume, and (unbeknownst to them) the prize for the best competition is better by far than those offered to the winning quiz team. Here’s your first clue to my costume, find others hidden around this article:

October the 26th is promising to be one of the more interesting GeekOut’s ever, there are a handful of ideas I’ll be throwing in this month that I have not alluded to on Facebook or Meetup. If you can’t get there, keep your eyes on GeekOut for the catch-up articles we publish on our events every month.

Plans

November and December will be busy months, but we’ll battle on to make GeekOut bigger and better, concluding the year with a GeekOut Christmas party, but as the Shrewsbury Meet should fall on the 28th, I want to talk to you – the attendees who are the lifeblood of the event – to find out how and when to run the Meet to suit you, as well as working closely with our venue, Monty’s Tower who have been friendly, encouraging, and even enthusiastic in making the Shrewsbury Meets as good as they could possibly be.

See this projector?

Oh, how I yearn to use this projector for running computer-game oriented competitions, or just to get some different games running. I’m quite aware than not everyone wants to play board games, some of us want to get their hands on mouse and keyboard, a joystick, or a controller. My attempts at connecting my tablet have thus far been fruitless, but technology is bountiful, and there are gears turning that will make it possible for new competitions.

On the subject, I’m idly toying with ideas for upcoming competitions, but as a role-player and a writer I’m naturally orienting toward design based competitions, such as the Pokethulhu designs and the character creation. While they’ve yielded some fantastic content (and I love watching you guys work), it wouldn’t hurt to throw in a little diversity here and there.

Still, it’s you – always you – who we create these events for, in Shrewsbury and in Bristol, and it is your feedback that we thrive upon for making every event better than ever. So this month I have one question and one question only.

With the means to bringing computer games to GeekOut Shrewsbury on the horizon, what games would you like to multiplayer first?

Later on today you’ll see the poll open up to choose a venue for the pre-meet venue for October 26th. I’ll see you there.

GeekOut Shrewsbury Meet – July ’17

July brings GeekOut Shrewsbury a change in format, no longer divided between two venues, we instead begin at 14:00 at Monty’s Tower and stay there until we’re good and ready to leave… Midnight. Usually slightly earlier. For the determined, the keen, and the early risers, we met up at the Coffeehouse for a fond farewell and a thanks for the memories, and brownies, and for being generally nice people. (more…)

GeekOut Bristol Meet 15/08 Gallery

The August meet has now come and gone for the Bristol geeks and I have to say, it was one hell of a turn out. We met a lot of new faces and there were plenty of regulars at the event too, some who hadn’t been to the meetup for a while and some who just never leaves (hi).

We started proceedings by going to the Commercial Rooms. One thing we found out was that the Commercial Rooms were unwilling to reserve a table, which was crazy considering the number of us going… However we still all managed to go there. Eight people had signed up for food on the meetup, but it ended up being around twelve of us at the Commercial Rooms for food around 3pm. That was obviously just the start of the night…

Throughout the night, plenty of new people came into the group and a lot of GeekOut “veterans” were there too. In total, we must have had about 30-32 people, which was about what I was expecting from Meetup and Facebook event likes. It was a superb and fun night, filled with a lot of banter and a lot of interesting people. We got to make some cool new friends and I hope people come back again!

We introduced the Book Share as a new feature of this months activities and I’d like to think that it went pretty well. Through out the night, people were picking up books. Someone got their hands on 3 new books to read through, which was lovely! I’m certain some people have borrowed some of the books/manga I took in too. We had a sheet, a really simple sheet in fact which looks like these “Book Swap Pages” (It’s a .odt document, an open document for word processors). The “To borrow” list was 3/4 full!!! Incredible!

We had our Pac-Man competition, the winner of whom was one of our newcomers, Andy Wade. To everyone who gave it a go, many thanks! Hope you all enjoyed having a little game of Pac-Man to share!

Onwards until the next GeekOut Bristol Meetup, which is on Friday 11th September. Now to think what new activities to include in the next geek meet… Hmm… Any suggestions? Were you at this event? Let us know in the comments below, or over on Facebook and Twitter. Thanks everyone for turning up!

August ’15 – Competition Winner

We’re keen to deliver more competitions over on the GeekOut South-West Facebook page. We’re hoping to do more with competitions too. We had a fair few responses to this months competition, but alas, there could only be one winner for this months competition. We put all the names into a hat, we shook the hat, we then threw the hat out of the window. Next we retrieved the hat, threw it into a purging fire and then went to buy a new hat.

From there, we looked inside of our brand new hat, used a magical spell or ten on it and finally we came up with the result. The winner for this months competition is:

Rox from AddAltMode

Congratulations to Rox! If you’ve all not had a chance, please check out AddAltMode, which is a wonderful website that celebrates their geekdoms in a most passionate way!

To Rox: We’ll be contacting you soon so we can sort out the transfer of all of the brilliant games in the Bandai Namco Humble Bundle.

That’s it for this months competition. For the readers of GeekOut South-West, we’ll always announce the competitions on here, warning you to go and check our Facebook channel. When you get a chance to, please do go and give us a Like. We do lots of exclusive content straight to Facebook (mostly due to file sizes of some of our images!)
