Top 10 Half Breeds

GeekOut Top 10s

When we came up with Half Breeds to put on the list, we didn’t expect it to be a quick and easy one – So we decided we would do something a little bit different. When this one came up as our second most voted from two weeks ago, we knew we could have an actual physical discussion with some fellow geeks. We were at Kitacon this past week; which was a perfect way to get some of our fellow geeks to get their voices heard.

Stay tuned to the GeekOut YouTube channel, as next week you’ll get a glimpse of our ridiculous behind the scenes process in the first and possibly last recorded Top 10. It was great fun, we had some great discussion and we feel we have a nicely rounded list. Be sure to subscribe, because we’d love to share some of the fun we have in creating our lists with you. In the mean time, here’s the product of our efforts, in the Top 10 half-breeds! (more…)

Top 10 Vampires

GeekOut Top 10s

You voted for it, you’ve got it. This week, we’re looking at some of the most blood thirsty creatures ever known to sci-fi/fantasy. No, we’re not on about a leech, nor a parasite, but they certainly could fall under these categories. We can only be talking about Vampires, a type of undead that likes to nom on your blood, essentially draining you of your very life force. What a horrible way to go.

Have you ever looked outside at the dark night (not to be confused with the film that scores better than 5/7), then romanticised about someone nibbling on your neck? These guys will be a literal pain in your neck when they clamp down on your flesh and drain you of your fluids (That doesn’t sound healthy). Join us as we count down our Top 10 Vampires. (more…)

Vampires, Film Stars and Monsters

Of all the many monsters of myth and legend, none make for better films than vampires.Enigmatic and deadly stalkers of the night, sourced from a thousand legends from a thousand cultures throughout history, with many conflicting accounts of their strengths, their weaknesses, and their origins. There are a few things that the majority of vampires have in common:

  • Bloodlust – Mostly a direct need to feed on blood, but many vampire myths talk of full-flesh cannibalism, blood-rites, or simple anaemia or a blood-borne disease that carries vampirism.
  • Aversion to Sunlight – No vampire likes the sun, not one. Even dhampyrs (half-vamps) like Rayne or Blade prefer the dark to the day. It varies between an irritation to a lethal reaction to the hard light of day, but it’s always there.
  • The Bat Motif – Vampire bats are the most famous haematophages, with the possible exception of mosquitoes, but they’re not quite so scary. Vampires and bats all share the fangs and the night life, so they tend to get along just fine.

So many times the lords of darkness have been put to the silver screen, and in so many different forms that they can barely be called a single creature, and more a category. Werewolves are always werewolves, and Frankenstein’s monster will always be called Frankenstein by those with limited mental capacity, but vampires are a lore unto themselves. (more…)

Insanity’s Blade (Greenlight Campaign)

Platforms: Windows, OS X, Linux
Steam Greenlight page: http://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=202226008
Genres: Action, Adventure, Casual, Platformer, Arcade, Horror
Made by: Casual Bit Games

I was browsing Twitter, as a guy does at times, when I was asked by a Dan Rhodenizer (@danrhodenizer) to vote a game up.
I’m certainly not one to pass up a look at a game, especially when someone asks me to give my vote. So, let’s talk about what I think, from what I’ve seen of Insanity’s Blade.

Story

It appears that the story behind this game is that you are a father, who has to have the journey from hell (Actually, to hell) in order to save the souls of your wife and child. The story has been taken from the Insanity’s Blade graphic novel and the game looks to replicate the style as much as it possibly can.

As far as I can gather, this is the first in a series of planned games revolving around a sword and a dad’s hatred.

Promotional material

So there is the co-op demo video that has been put on the Steam Greenlight. It appears that you will be joined by an AI companion or you can go at it with a friend! Nice.

He looks happy :)

The game had modest expectations on Kickstarter. It met and exceeded it’s targets and now is looking to get greenlit. So, ladies and gentlemen, go ahead and click the “Yes” button on this, if you’re interested in a game that is available on multiple platforms and if you want to see it go far.

So, if you’re interested in an 8-bit trip to hell, let’s vote this up and see where it goes. More variety on Steam is always a good thing and more developers on Steam always rules. Psst, hey, Casual Bit Games, if you’re looking at this, could you happen to put up a copy of the demo’s that were available during Kickstarter onto your website? We’d really, really like that!

So, if you’re just looking for a new game to play once it has been approved, consider voting Insanity’s Blade up – Looks like it could be great fun and very reminiscent of Ghosts n Goblins or Golden Axe. We guessed that’s the point, so if you enjoyed those two incredible classics, this should be right up your alley.

2spooky4me – No wait, this sounds like fun!
