Dungeon Situational – Five Shields

Shields, the piece of metal or wood between you and pain, and the thing that turns your fighter from a bucket of hit points into an indomitable tank. Because it’s not dealing damage it often gets overlooked by today’s modern bloodthirsty types, and it might take more than a hefty plank with handles to convince your players to maybe drop a sword in favour of some protection.

Presented below, five examples of shields with story, magical power, secrets, or just present something more interesting than a boost to armour class. The rules referenced are for Dungeons & Dragons 5th edition, but can be readily modified for other editions or systems. (more…)

Dungeon Situational – Pandemonium Spell List

Let us suppose a variation of magic that does not manipulate a natural force ever-present in the world. Instead let us consider a school of magi who pull their power from the realms beyond the material, reaching into the turning gears of Mechanus, the glorious light of Celestia, the feral twilight of Ysgard, or – as presented here – the twisting tunnels, the ever blowing gales mingled with the howls of souls as they shred and dissolve into the headwaters of the Styx, Pandemonium.

The spells here are selected with a view to their aesthetic relation to Pandemonium, which borders the roiling chaos of Limbo and the demonic halls of the Abyss. Pandemonium itself is predominantly home to demons, a handful of damned souls that endure the winds, and a few evil or mad gods who have come to build their realms within. The spells are heavy on necrotic forces, death, madness, and eternally howling winds. (more…)


Dungeon Situational – An Item Set

Items sets have been a classic component of RPGs for many years, perhaps most commonly in ARPGs. Groups of lootable items brought together by a shared history, each powerful in their own right, but together immensely potent. They might have been crafted together to work in unison, or perhaps they were brought together once and never again can be divided.

In this, as in most other Dungeon Situational articles, the items below are written with the Dungeons & Dragons 5th edition rules in mind, but can be modified to suit any edition or system you choose. Presenting…

Dungeon Situational – The Blade Dancer

A Prestige Class is a class that one can take when advancing in level, but is not available to starting characters as they require a greater degree of training or esoteric knowledge that they could possibly possess as lowly hedge wizards or mercenary thugs. For more information check out this Unearthed Arcana from WotC themselves, but let me add that I firmly believe that a Prestige Class should only be issued as an option or opportunity by the DM or GM, as they make for a reward on-par with magic items or greater boons.

The following Prestige Class is designed for Dungeons & Dragons 5e, and being heavily detailed may be harder to adjust to other systems and editions than other Dungeon Situational articles. I’d also like to say that this material is not playtested, not even a little bit! The balance of this character option is based upon my familiarity with the system as a whole, but has not been checked against such complications as feats and mixing them with multiple classes. So if you use this material let me know how it goes.

Kickstarter Highlight – Strongholds and Streaming by Matt Colville

It’s been a while since we’ve done a Kickstarter article, but here’s one that caught me by the eye and the wallet.

I may have mentioned that I am a fan of Matthew Colville, a writer, DM, and YouTuber and the writer of the Critical Role official comic book. I may have mentioned it repeatedly to anyone who will listen. So when I discover he has a Kickstarter in mind I was all kinds of ready to lay my money on the table, it would inevitably be Dungeons & Dragons oriented, and worth the money.

Dungeon Situational – Kobold Traps

Ever hear of Tucker’s Kobolds? If you have then you know that a half-dozen hit points does not mean an easy fight. In this week’s Dungeon Situational I’ll pitch a few ideas for the kinds of traps that kobolds may construct given their stature, disposition, and available resources.

Dungeon Situational – Magical Implements

Dungeon Situational is a new series for Dungeons & Dragons players easily modified for other editions and roleplaying systems that feature ideas for DMs and players that can (hopefully) help you make your characters and your campaigns uniquely yours. Spells, creatures, trinkets, encounters, rewards, and obstacles of any and all sorts.

For today, something I often find my spellcasters lacking, unique magical implements. These are no mere wands and staves, these trinkets are intrinsically magical in their own right, and have minor magical properties of their own that should not unbalance the game… certainly no worse than your average magic item. Review – Xanathar’s Guide To Everything

Last year I kicked off the schedule by reviewing Volo’s Guide to Monsters, a fantastic alternative to wave after wave of Monster Manuals that we’ve enjoyed in previous editions, told from the perspective of Volothamp Geddarm, a peddler of of guidebooks in the Forgotten Realms. I finally got my hands on the guidebook written from the perspective of another famous denizen of the Realms, the beholder crimeboss Xanathar, who has knowledge in all fields that might profit or threaten him or his goldfish.

Xanathar’s Guide to Everything covers a wide variety of categories for players and dungeon masters alike, combining properties of both a Players Handbook and Dungeon Master’s Guide expansion. This book was awash with hype, partially because it’s been visibly in the making for months, maybe years. So without further spiel, let’s get into it: (more…)
