Happy New Year 2019 from GeekOut South-West
January 1st! Happy New Year everyone! It’s a new day, it’s a new beginning and y’know, I feel like this is going to be a fantastic year for us all. I think our group’s going to go from strength to strength and I think that we’re going to have a great year for the website. But that’s not all – I feel like this is just going to be an all round good year. So strap yourselves in, we’re going to go for a time-travelling journey for what we’re hoping to do in 2019 – And hopefully you’ll be joining us for the whole ride.
This year, there are a lot of things I want to get done. There are a lot of things I want to get better at. There are a lot of things I want to do different to the previous years. I think we all say things like this, when new year’s resolutions come around, but I’ve given myself an outlet to try and ensure these things are done. As such, as many of you may have seen recently, I am challenging myself to do one cosplay piece per month for the whole year. Some will be larger (and harder to do) than others. This month, following on from the article I put up, I am doing the Beads of Subjugation, but to make it trickier, I am learning how to make proper magatama. I’m looking forward to sharing my results with you all!
Furthermore, 2019 is going to have to see some changes for the way our groups work, including the possibility of more events across the country. That’d be nice. Next up, our Discord channel needs a bit of a refresh and an update, as well as the website itself. I mentioned yesterday, that there have been problems with getting the new site up and running and one of those issues we’ll learn more about this month, with Article 13. I hope that this is something we can work around pretty expediently, but until then, I guess hold on tight until I give you another update article on that… But hey, I at least have gotten some tidying up done on there.
Other than that, this year is going to be a whole lot of looking forward. I’m excited to try and finish as much as I can off, but let’s be honest for a moment – Let’s point out that this is the time of year we all start our resolutions.
Let’s stay on track, folks!
Bristol in a week, Scotland in April, and America in August (hopefully), so I’ll be missing my regular summer convention for sure, and the people in it, but I have plans to fill that void in my life. These things should not count as holidays, they are tiring in their own right, with all the travel and talking to people and things, I haven’t had a real holiday in years, a proper relaxing trip somewhere nice and quiet, somewhere I can read without thinking “I should be writing, why am I not writing?” which is not likely for a while because I have days booked at Oswestry library all through 2019! I will always need to be ready with new ideas.
So far as GeekOut goes, I’d like to see some growth in the Shrewsbury Meets, and I think I want to help see new Meets start around the country (at least one person has expressed a possible interest in running an East Midlands gig). I have a few ideas for series in the new year, including one I want to make some videos for: DMing 102, some advanced delves into using narrative devices, game design concepts, and maybe just a few things you may not have considered to make your role-playing games more intense and interesting, along with a few discussions on the nature of the hobby. But I’m going to start the year by reviewing EVERY SPIDER-MAN FILM of the century. I’m not going back to the pyjamas and potato cam film from the 70’s and 80’s… But I might do one day.
And I have a whole lot of projects that have been on “the to-do list” for too long. Time to stop having ideas and do something with the old ones.
Once again, thanks to everyone who joined us in 2018. Today marks the start of 2019, so keep your calendar’s clear for us and join us every step of the way of our ridiculous journey in the making. Ahh, 2019, let’s be positive about this one. Things can only get better, right? What are your plans for 2019? Do you have any goals to finish off? Share your thoughts and projects in the comments below, or over on Facebook and Twitter. To think the past few years haven’t even been bad, but, from Joel and Timlah, we wish you all an incredibly…
