Anime With ‘Halloween’ Episodes

Halloween isn’t hugely celebrated over in Japan, as it’s mostly a Western tradition. It’s slowly becoming more and more adopted over the years, complete with its own bad outcomes. However, Halloween is still a day to celebrate, a tradition we’ve held dear to us for many a year. Our own version of Halloween has changed over recent memory, becoming less about the tradition and more about wearing costumes and generally having a good time. This Halloween, remember to keep safe – And check out some Halloween episodes in anime, a medium the holiday doesn’t get a lot of exposure to.

Soul Eater Not!

Soul Eater Not! Episode 09

Soul Eater is a world where cats turn into witches, the sun and moon will laugh at you, with the most evil intent and there are plenty of the damned roaming around. Indeed, Soul Eater was a perfect anime for a Halloween episode to slip into and thankfully, they didn’t disappoint. The date of Halloween is when protagonist Tsugumi must pick a Meister partner, between her two friends Meme and Anya, both of whom are extremely dissimilar.

Sadly, that’s about all of the Halloween references in this – It vaguely goes into it, as you have some pumpkins, some bats and even costume wearing. It’s pleasant enough to watch, but it’s not really hugely Halloween-y.

Ouran High School Host Club

Ouran High School Host Club – Episode 21

I think on this list, this may be the one I give you that has the strongest sense of being a Halloween episode. Ouran High School Host Club features the protagonist, Haruhi, as she tries to cater as a ‘host’ in the host club. Hosts treat their guests in a way that would make the guests want to come back, sometimes going so far as to be flirtatious, if it comes to it. Haruhi’s disguised as a boy throughout, which leads to plenty of shenanigans. Ouran is a series which pokes Otaku culture with a large stick, having a laugh at its expense – and with it.

In this episode, Halloween is a huge factor. Indeed, the whole episode revolves on Halloween, is to do with Halloween – and they even get into costumes for their Halloween hosting. As seen in the above picture, our hosts will go so far as to play into the erotic fantasies of the women that come to their club. All in all, this episode epitomises Halloween, but also adds their own spin.

Blood: the Last Vampire

I’ve cheated you all. I’ve found the perfect anime for Halloween – It’s Blood: the Last Vampire. This is an awesome film and it is all set around Halloween time; as well as the theme being very on the nose for Halloween in general. If you’ve never seen Blood, I’d recommend it hugely. It’s somewhat dark, somewhat broody and it’s hugely unapologetic. All in all, if you’re looking for an anime where Halloween at least gets a mention, as well as it being a simply awesome story – Blood is the one for you.

There are many more Halloween inspired and themed episodes in anime out there, as well as whole films that have at least some mention of it. Do you know of any that I didn’t include in today’s article? Remember to don your favourite Halloween outfit tonight and don’t be afraid of the spooky, as it’s in the spirit of the season after all!
