Star Realms Frontiers

Back in August 2017, I backed this product on Kickstarter as an early birthday present, under the impression it would’ve come in time for December that same year. A handful of delays with design and printing eventually led the EU fulfilment to happen this September.

Was it worth the wait?

Dungeon Situational – 20 Travelling Partners pt. 1

Ahhh… this may have to be a two-parter. This is going to be a two-parter. Having hit 1600+ words with only half of my wandering NPCs written, I shall save another ten for next Thursday.

Here below I offer you ten NPCs who may travel with your party. Some may help, others may hinder, all were created using random tables and generators for race, gender, jobs and roles, although the names and details are all my own. Thanks to the Hyper Halfling’s Book of Lists, Xanathar’s Guide to Everything, and Fantasy Name Generators for giving the bare bones of the characters brought to life below.

Allow these fine folk to join the party for their next journey to help bridge the gaps between civilisation and adventure. If nothing else… it’ll be memorable. (more…)

Wordpress Plugin: MyCRED for Self-Hosted Wordpress Websites

MyCRED is a plugin that I’ve had to try to get used to, really fast. It’s a very powerful bit of software, allowing the admin of the site to award points to users, based on some interactions with the website. For instance, you might want to award a user for watching a video for longer than 3 minutes. You could also want to reward your users for simply commenting on your articles, or by having your own forum and them interacting with it. All in all, MyCRED was made specifically with this problem in mind – To be able to reward your users for interacting with your site in the way you want them to.

Review – The Dragon Prince

I may have mentioned I’m a bit of a late-to-the-party Avatar fan, I marathon’d the entire series a few years ago, and it’s become something of a node, a go-to point in my creative reference library whenever I create something fantasy. It’s an off-piste and indirect approach to the classical westernised fantasy of elves and dragons that Tolkien drew together from Arthurian, Norse, and Christian mythologies. The series embraced eastern viewpoints and philosophies, the notions of household and local gods or spirits, the Qi-like elements of elemental bending, and with it brought profoundly human elements, and rich political analogues.

That’s a tall order for a kids show! (more…)

Community Projects and Software

Software and programming is an amazing feat of engineering. Everyone should be proud of what they’ve contributed, no matter how big or small their part in the process is. From some video game software, through to a much larger full scale operating system, software and communities have been a thing since, well, always. Programmers may typically be associated as unsocial folk, but they are amongst the most social and co-operative people I’ve met. Not everyone may feel the same, but I thought I’d talk briefly today about community projects and how they make such a difference to everyone who’s ever used a computer.

Celebrating Five Years of GeekOut South-West

Holy smokes, I knew this year was my fifth year running this blog, but on Wednesday 19th, it was officially the anniversary of the website. Hurrah! No, there’s no time for cake, as I thought that was a perfect excuse for me to chat about everything that’s happened with us. The good, the bad (although there’s not really a lot of ‘bad’) and of course, the outright amazing. All in all, it’s been five years of ups, so expect to see a lot of gushing about how excellent this has been… And hey – We’ll chat about the meetup and what that means to us, as well as future plans.
