Kickstarter Highlight – IS IT A PLANE!?

I’ve expressed an interest in diceless role-playing games for a few years now, but I’ve yet to be involved in a game that is completely without some influence of chance, even the odd playing card based game which wasn’t wholly without dice. Is It A Plane!? by Psychic Cactus Games is something rather different… actually something very different. Now funding on Kickstarter is a role-play about interpretation, and is going to be a must have for those who are quick on the draw.

Kickstarter Review

One for the comic-book fans, Is It A Plane!? is a role-playing game in which adventurers have to detail their exploits and feats – not by verbal description – but by speed-drawing them into a comic book style. The result is dependant on how readily your GM (or Editor) can interpret your artistic stylings, and how they lay it out across two pages of exhilarating super-powered action. IIaP will be distributed via DriveThru RPG as pdf, and print versions, the print versions to include dry erase cards for quick and reusable panel drawing.

The crowdfunding campaign will help the rule-book see publication complete with supporting artwork, and stretch goals opening up the possibility of new published adventures available depending on your pledge level, along with pre-generated characters and more artwork.

If you’re not a confident artist then there’s no need to panic, or to be put off. The game requires rapid-fire drawing skills that even excellent artists will be hard-pressed to excel with, and narrative rewards include more time to draw, and more panels or to change the story in play. And of course, if you’re looking for a way to improve your drawing skills, this is a fun and dynamic way to develop on the skills you don’t know you have.

If I have not made myself clear already, I really want to have a shot at this game. I consider myself moderately capable of drawing, but under the pressure of a time limit with a story on the line? It could make it all so much more dramatic.

Backer Rewards

All estimated delivery dates are around December this year, and from the World Class Athlete (£60) pledge level up, offers are limited to a small number of backers, and the topmost pledge level has already been filled (I have therefor not included it below, no point tantalising you with things you cannot have). (Photo references may be sent, but cannot be copyright protected images.)

At the time of writing, Is It A Plane!? has reached £1,179 of it’s £4,250 goal, a long way from the finish line or even the earliest stretch goals, but with a over three weeks remaining on the campaign and an incredibly low point of entry for the basic rules I feel like a little word of mouth could see this little Kickstarter go a long way. Psychic Cactus has something of a back catalogue on DriveThru RPG that’s worth a look, and I sincerely hope to see this unique idea join it.
