Kickstarter Highlight: GROWL
GROWL makes an incredibly bold claim, saying “We designed a better werewolf card game for you and your clan!” When I saw this tagline, I honestly couldn’t help but click onto the product and have a look. What I saw appears to be a simple, quick game of Werewolf with some interesting differences. From pure discussion and deception to a card game, is GROWL all bark and no bite? I decided to put my money where my mouth was, as I’ve ordered myself a copy of GROWL – And here’s why.
Kickstarter Review (Click here for the Kickstarter Page)
Colourful, fun and beautifully illustrated, GROWL is attempting to bring the concepts of Werewolf (or Mafia, for those who remember that) to an even wider audience. Werewolf has been updated over the years, also including different styles of gameplay and many, many roles. However, GROWL looks to take that role system and flip it on its head, allowing people to play the concept of Werewolf with a much simpler card game mechanic.
Personally, I enjoy Werewolf on the odd occasion. I find I can’t play it all the time, as it’s a bit restraining (I.E everyone must be there the whole time, which once the GM (or app) has finished talking, can take some time). In settings such as our GeekOut Bristol Meets, Werewolf can literally isolate a whole group of people who must focus on what is being said. Having said that, GROWL takes this flaw and throws it away, adding in a card game element.
GROWL takes between 10-15 minutes, where everyone is assigned a role of Human of Werewolf at the start of the game. On your turn, you draw the top card and you decide who gets the card. You can play the bite card, which can be cancelled with charms. If a human is bitten 3 times, they are turned into a Werewolf. Wounds kill you if you get stabbed 3 times, which can be healed with a salve. There is gold, acting as victory points, meaning if your team wins, the player with the most gold wins within that team. Once the Night card is drawn, everyone passes a card to the left and to the right – Meaning you have a chance of being bitten. These cards are shuffled before you get to look at them, meaning you never quite know who is a werewolf sat next to you.
On the final night, all of the Werewolves howl. If everyone howls, the Werewolves win, otherwise the remaining humans win.
Taking a step back, the aesthetics of the game are the main reason I was drawn in. The gameplay sounds simple enough, although I do wonder why people wouldn’t intentionally just get bitten to end up as werewolves – But that’s possibly just me thinking about different conclusions to the game. I’m looking forward to seeing the final product’s rules, as honestly the game, the box, the art and even things such as the gorgeous coins included are beautifully presented. This game gets full marks from me purely on its looks, which isn’t a big part of game appeal to me, typically. Furthermore, this’ll be the second game I own with a furry box! It looks so soft.
In case you’re curious about the rules, this PDF shows all the rules of the game. This doesn’t seem to address my point of “why not just willingly become a werewolf?” but hey, think of it as hard mode!

GROWL is a novel take on Werewolf, which is honestly such an old game by this point, new iterations included. I’m excited to see how it addresses my thought of everyone just becoming a werewolf, merely turning it into a game to collect as many coins as possible, but that’s neither here nor there. If the art turns out the way it looks above, then this is going to be a game that I’ll always be visually pleased about. But what do you think of GROWL? Has it bitten off more than it can chew by claiming to be a better Werewolf? As of today, there’s not a lot of time left on the Kickstarter campaign – In fact, by Friday it’ll all be over with! Make sure to back GROWL today. But in the mean time, leave your thoughts and opinions below, or over on Facebook and Twitter.
