Geek Proud, GeekOut.

Happy New Year 2018 from GeekOut South-West

Today marks the 1st of January and as you’re reading this, I’m probably still tucked in bed. Don’t get me wrong, I’d like to start the year off nice and early, I truly would, but ultimately I’d only end up going to bed earlier, right? So which is the bigger crime? That’s what I thought – Happy new year, everybody! It’s time to consider your resolutions, as always, but I’d say that it’s about time we stop relying on long-term resolutions and instead relying on smaller goals. Here’s what GeekOut South-West will be doing this year, over time – and we’ll see how far we get with these goals in 2018.

eBook Release(s)

GeekOut Top 10s

In early-mid 2018, Joel and the sleepy-sod Timlah will look to release their first ever eBook via our GeekOut Media name. We’re keen to ensure that the book is of the highest quality and – Guess what? If you read this website, the book is going to be god damn free! We’re going to suggest you can contribution towards our efforts, along with a way to actually donate towards our work, however we’re keen to let people be able to read the eBook itself, without penalties if you’re skint. We want to share our geek fandoms with the world; so it’s time for us to get on with it and give you guys a quality eBook you’ll be happy with.

Sorry, no refunds on donations!

Discord Growth

Our Discord channel, as of the time of writing, is at 100 members – Which, when you consider we started 2017 with about 30 users – It’s pretty damn good going! That’s growth right there. Well, we’d like to continue the trend of growing out the channel. We’re not just about having people from the UK – We want a thriving Discord community with plenty of people interacting with us and one another daily. We’d like to see our channel take off even further – So, keep an eye out as we improve Gordon the GeekOut Bot further, along with the addition of a few other surprise elements that we’re sure you’ll all love.

Website Updates

Like a running joke, the new website has been held back and kept back so damn much – But now, in 2018, I really need to make sure this goes out to everyone. I’m excited to try to get this out there, however time is still needed. Some of the problems I’ve been met with includes moving from Bristol to Gloucester and now back to Bristol – But along with that, 2017 was a strange year for my day job and, furthermore, I always had other priorities that really needed to come first, such as working with Joel to boost GeekOut Shrewsbury Meet and, of course, the Discord channel which saw exponential growth.

GeekOut Bristol Meet & GeekOut Shrewsbury Meet

Yes, yes, I know, it’s like – This is an obvious part of this article, isn’t it? That’s why it’s left to last!

In case you were blissfully unaware, such as a certain snoring Timlah after a heavy night out hosting GeekOut Bristol Meet on New Years Eve, we have an events calendar up. It’s a simple Google Calendar, which you can upload to iCal and other formats. If you also use a Google Calendar, then you can import our calendar directly into your own. We’ve set out a provisional schedule for every single currently planned event in 2018, allowing you to plan in advance; although please, please bear in mind that these are not guaranteed dates – They’re just the projected dates based on our typical schedules. You can also see the other events/conventions we’re going to attend in 2018!

But, Joel and the still-snoozing Timlah had a good chat before the new year. We want to do what we can to help promote the events in newer, more interesting ways. Sure, this year we’re going to do a lot of the same – Writing articles, showing off bits and bobs we’ve finished, going to conventions and taking lots of damn cool geek pictures – But there’s one thing we were never good at – And that’s actually promoting our events even further afield. It’s a lot of work; but it’s something we’re passionate about. We want to bring everyone together, so stay tuned as this year, we’re gonna get bigger.

2018 is going to be another really busy year for us; so for everyone of you who clicks on this website, reads what we have to say or at least just clicks – It means a lot to us! We don’t get any ad revenue for this website, as of yet, but one day we may look into ads. Alternatively, we may decide to opt for different approaches to monetising the website in some way. We’d rather make this transparent, so you guys can decide whether or not you’re going to ad block everything we do. But, as we progress through 2018, let’s be ready for some really good times, some great conversation and, as ever, some excellent geek moments.

Roll on 2018! You’ll be better than 2017, right?

From tomorrow, we return to our usual article schedule. Thanks for everything – We hope you stay with us on our ride through 2018.

Happy New Year to you as well. I should probably look in to Discord as everyone seems to be using it but I’m old and just use Twitter.

    • Happy new year!

Twitter is great, but Discord is a chat client that can sit on your desktop – makes it much easier to keep up with friends and others :) It’s similar to an IRC channel!
