Video Game Review: Little Alchemy 2

Time wasting games for the mobile are one thing, but what about games you can also play on your browser? Looking for something quick and easy, with a lot of potential for building up the hours? Well buckle up, as this is a game that anyone can jump in and play. It’s a game that’s suitable for all ages, whilst being full of funny, quirky references which will have you smiling. I’m on about Little Alchemy 2, a game of combinations and brand new item creations.

The aim of the game is very easy: You need to create as many combinations as you can. There’s no time limit, you just have to create as many combinations as possible.

You do this, by dragging one item on top of another item. Doing this creates a combination. There can be a variety of ways to make the same item, so sometimes you have to play with a lot of different items.

Early on, for instance, you’re taught that Air plus Air creates Pressure, which can then be used in conjunction with Earth to create Stone. As you get further through the game, you encounter strange entries, such as Pinnochio, Wizards and Zombies. There’s a lot of combinations – In fact, there’s so many wacky combinations, it throws you off at first, before you realise that the game is just full of such combinations… And soon, you’ll be raising phoenixes like it’s nobodies business.


Easy, but with some of the items getting a tad bit of complexity. With the basic elemental items being very simply designed, where air is simply some white triangles, it was a surprise when we got to things such as Pinnochio. Nothing is a masterpiece by any stretch of the imagination, however all of the items look good. The design element of the game is simple yet understated, something which more mobile friendly games should take into consideration.


The audio is very minimal in Little Alchemy 2, but in a way that keeps you wanting to find more. It’s filled with simple chime like sounds; an electronic beat to keep you going along and a few different changes in tempo. Each individual song is simplistic, but it keeps the mood calm, serene and dare I say it, full of bouncy inquisitiveness which will keep you coming back for more. Sometimes, minimal is the most audible.


As you can probably tell from the above review, I really love Little Alchemy 2. It’s a title that has kept me going back for more, regardless of how long I leave it. On the Android version, I’m currently at 357/661 discovered items, however it’s fair to point out that I don’t play through it quickly. I’ve had it installed for a few months and I go back to it occasionally, then come away for a few days before going back. It’s a game where you never feel bad for leaving it, but instead, you feel happy when you go back to it. It’s simple, it’s really simple, but ultimately, much like I said in the audio section: Sometimes, minimal is the most audible.
