Geek Proud, GeekOut.

GeekOut Bristol Meet – July 14th: VIDEO GAME HELPLINE

It’s that time of the month once again, when GeekOut Bristol takes to the streets… No we don’t. We get to the pub and we enjoy drinks, board games, video games, comics and books, stories, tech and so much more. But what do we have planned this month? What makes this one so special, that you really shouldn’t miss this event? As always, we’ll look at what’s coming up this Friday at our seriously cool GeekOut Bristol Meet.

———————–
FOODIE PRE-MEET (Five Guys: 12:30-13:50):
———————–

That’s right, we at GeekOut South-West believe in having a good nomming session before we start the night off of fun, games, drinks and great company!

We’ll be eating at Five Guys, which means we can start a little bit later than our usual midday starting time. We’ll all meet up between 12:15 and 12:30, then we’ll all go and get ourselves a delicious burger with some chips. Great food, not terribly priced and all in all, a great choice to start our meetup to!

MAIN EVENT: 14:00-Midnight (Old Market Tavern)
———————–

Board games? Check!
Geeks in costume? Check!
Gamers ready to GeekOut? You bet’cha!

Of course, we’re all about meeting up together, enjoying a damn good event and having lots of food and drink together. We chat about everything, from video games through to anime, sci-fi and fantasy, literature and comics – You name it, we probably have a geek who digs it as much as you do!

PLEASE NOTE:

Food & drink can NOT be brought in with you to the Old Market Tavern. If you are caught with food and drink on the premises, you will be asked to leave until you’ve disposed of your food or drink.

There will be a food menu at Old Market Tavern in the evening! The food is very cheap and it’s absolutely delicious! Trust me, I’ve eaten there enough times… But regulars of the event are also fans of the food there! The food is home made as well, so it’s simply scrummy! Food is usually available from 5pm.

BOARD GAMES (& a dash of video games)
———————–

As always, we’ll have a large selection of board games available, so please do check out what we have:

– Bucket of Doom

– Cash n Guns
– Chess
– Code of Nine
– Fluxx
– Goat Lords
– Harry Potter Trivial Pursuit
– Jungle Speed

– Pokemon Monopoly
– Rogues to Riches
– Scrabble

AND MANY MORE!

We won’t be bringing every game from here on in: If there’s a specific game you want to see, please let me know in the comments below.

Also, bring along your devices – Quiplash 2 and Drawful 2 are played throughout the day. These are games where you connect with your smartphones or tablets (Or anything that can connect to a browser really). We also sometimes play other games, such as Worms and people with 3DSes can pick up StreetPasses and of course play games with other 3DS players.

We will have a projector, with a stand, for Quiplash 2, Drawful 2 and more!

BOOK & COMIC SWAP
———————–

One of our most unique features is our Book & Comic Swap, a collection of books and comics are strewn across our table in the conservatory available for people to take a book, or to leave a book for others. These are books that have been donated, or are from my old repository. Pick up or borrow a book and get reading!

PLEASE NOTE: Books you saw last month might not be present this month, unless you have a specific request for books. A new request system will be put in place, in case you want a book to be present to take home or just to browse whilst at the GeekOut Bristol Meetup.

COSPLAYERS
———————–

Oh yeah, us gamers know how to get our geek on. Some of us love to just be in costume, others of us love to be more than a costume; we become the character. Be whoever you were meant to be and feel free to join us in costume for the event! Share your geek passions!

(Now to figure out who I will come as for this one..!)

*CHANGING* If you want to change into a costume when here, please note there’s no changing facilities. There are just standard toilet cubicles – Which are fine to change in, but you might want to consider this.

SOCIALISING
———————–

We’re one of the geekiest events in the South-West. We get people together to play board games and video games, share a pint and discuss what they enjoy in geekdom. Books, comics, music – Anything that you’re passionate about, you’ll be sure to meet fellow geeks who are into the same thing as you!

We do not discriminate – But if you ever find you have a problem with anything at the event, just let the host (Timlah) know and he’ll sort it out!

COMPETITION: 19:00-21:00 (TOURNAMENT TIME)
———————–

We’ll be holding another great GeekOut Bristol Meet competition – So if you’re new to GeekOut South-West, welcome – Here’s what we have in store for you this month. As always, we’ll be giving away physical and cash prizes, as well as steam games and one of our delicious posters*.

When you arrive at the meet, we’ll ask if you’re interested in taking part in our tournament. Depending on the number of players we have, we’ll have a different format – But the general idea will be that if we get at least 8 people, we can do a typical tournament format with 3 rounds. If we get as many as 16 contenders, we can get 4 rounds. Each round will consist of a different classic game, of a different genre. There’ll be set criteria for each round – and if it ends in a draw, there’ll be a second set of criteria that should prevent the draw from occuring.

An example of how our brackets might look

For instance: Game One might be Super Mario Bros. The challenge might be to get through world 1-1 with the highest score possible. However if someone matches the score, then we’ll look at how fast each player managed it. If there’s still a draw (incredibly), then we’ll continue the round to the second round. This competition will be moderated throughout, with 10 minute breaks between the rounds.

To keep it fair – All of the games we’ll be playing will not be revealed until the tournament begins… But these are all classic games only.

1st Prize: To be announced, £25 cash, 3 Steam games from our list and a GeekOut Poster of your choice.

2nd Prize: To be announced, £15 cash, 2 Steam games from our list and a GeekOut Poster of your choice.

3rd Prize: To be announced, £10 cash, 1 Steam game from our list and a GeekOut Poster of your choice.

Note: Occasionally, there may be even more on the day!

*Do not eat them.

COMPETITION: Hunger Tournament (18:00-19:00)
———————–

Not a video game player? Wanna add another board game to your collection? Great! Chris is looking to give away a review copy of the board game Hunger! If you’re around between 6pm-7pm, you might wanna take part in Chris’ competition for the only copy of this we have to give away.

———————–

There is so much to do and see at this months GeekOut Bristol Meet, so please do come along, bring a friend or a member of your family and come for a geeky night out.

As part of our commitment to being a great night out, we do not discriminate based upon age, gender, race, religion or sexuality. If at any point you feel you need to speak to someone about another’s actions, please grab the host (Timlah) and we’ll sort it out!

  1. Depending on how many people want to join in the Hunger board game tournament it may run later than 7 but don’t worry there will be plenty of time to take part in both.
