Timlah’s Cosplay Plans of 2017
With a new year comes new plans and new costumes to accompany them. I am always looking to build upon my frankly shoddy skills, so I am going to piece together a bunch of cosplay costumes to make people go “Oooh”. At least, that’s the plan… anyway, here are my main cosplay plans for Kitacon 2017!
Previously, I have written a bunch of mish-mash and rather basic tutorials, that have somehow been given the seal of approval on websites like Cosplay Tutorial. Clearly, that means my skills as a cosplayer must be, at least, standard! But this year, I intend to up my skill game exponentially. From more sewing, to more Worbla, I have some big, plans to learn from (but not too big).
I will be making props out of foam, which isn’t too far outside my remit, although I am looking to improve my finesse a lot. From carving and sculpting, I hope to work with not just foams, but plastics and resins in ways I have seen, but never practiced. Couple this with my weight loss goals for Kitacon, I am looking to play with electronics and LEDs specifically in a new and exciting manner.
Edward Elric – Fullmetal Alchemist
He sort of died out as I gained weight. The last time I wore my Edward coat was in 2015 – 2 years ago! There’s a small rip in it and the zip is a little busted, but I hope to be able to patch this right up and get it to a convention standard. If not, time to sort out a new Edward Elric coat. I would look to purchase a pattern of a similar coat, make alterations to the pattern and make it.
But most importantly for Edward this time around is the finer details. No more standard t-shirt: I am looking to make the shirt he wears underneath his coat. I would also love to remake the boots, as the ones I have are far too broken. But, even more fine detail includes his antenna, as well as the most important part… his arm. I have lots of Thermoplastic at home, so I expect to retry a Worbla arm. Will it be better than the last time? We’ll see!
Black Star – Soul Eater
Soul Eater, for the uninitiated, is an anime all about some students who are looking to become the master of their craft… but what is their craft exactly? Simple: Soul gathering! Black Star is famous (in his words), but even though he is delusional and a little eccentric, he is really kind hearted and makes a damn good hunter. With introductions out of the way, here’s what I see to be the main points…
He is relatively short and quick talking which suits me fine – But he has a truly outlandish haircut. I am certain that I will not be able to find a wig that will retain the shape and hold of the hair… so it’s time to learn how to style wigs properly! This is a pretty big step up for me, as I have always relied on ready to go stylised wigs. As well as this, Black Star has some unique weaponry, perfectly suited for my green foam.
Hah, that rhymes! Well, my raver costume, as fun as it was, really wasn’t that good in the grand scheme of things… However, I have ideas on what to do to improve it big time. It’s time to get really creative with the LED lights and it’s time to really up the game of the raving Pikachu. Someone even suggested that I evolve into a Raving Raichu, but what I do on that front remains to be seen.
I plan to do much more than these three costumes across the year, but in the meantime I am opening this article up to discussion on what your plans for cosplay are this year. Are you getting into the swing of things like Kim from Later Levels, or are you skilling up like me and hoping to make a few new pieces, such as a cane I intend to make for next months GeekOut Bristol Meet? Are you reworking old costumes? If you’re a cosplay regular, do you have any tips for this sub-par cosplayer? As always, leave your comments below, or over on Facebook, Twitter or Reddit.
