Prologue – Inspiration

Shield-Nano-Blue-Brown-RGB-HiResAny of you ever take part in NaNoWriMo?

National Novel Writing Month began in 1999; it’s a yearly effort to encourage creative thought and determined effort to a deadline. Participants have from the first minute of the first day in November until midnight on the thirtieth to complete a fifty thousand word novel from early planning stages to finished product, or at least a first draft. It’s a great way to get people motivated, bringing people together in a supporting network to get that niggling “I’m going to write a novel one day” feeling out of your system once and for all.

This November will be my third attempt, and this time I should really end the month with something to show for it. I think where I’ve been going wrong is that I’ve been trying to get the novel that I’ve been working on now for years put to paper. This year I’m going to try and go in with something completely new.

What a time to run low on inspiration.

I said at the start of the year I wanted to get a lot of things done, and that’s certainly coming about nicely. I’ve spent a lot of time at work doodling idly on post-its with a biro, I’m definitely getting better, and I swear it has nothing to do with my job and my feelings towards it. I may not have caught up on my reading, but I’ve certainly done more than I did last year. Games, I have most certainly played more, especially over the last couple of weeks.

That leaves “finish an old project” on the list. Running out of time on that but I think actually writing something substantial for NaNoWriMo will suffice for me, but I need a new idea, and preferably something I’ve never thought of.

So, every Tuesday over the next few weeks until November gets kicked off properly I’ll be asking you beautiful people to help me reach a decision on what to write. From genre, to story basics, protagonist(s) and supporting cast. I solemnly swear not to write anything more than what you guys give me until the first day of NaNoWriMo, I may formulate some ideas, but nothing will be finalised until Tuesday the third of November.

I freely admit it, my wellspring of inspiration is coughing dust right now. It happens from time to time, I’m sure many of you will have experienced much the same problem at some point in time, along with fluctuations of mood and changes in circumstances.

Inspiration is an elusive devil, I count myself lucky to have people around me of intelligence and creativity, and I don’t just count my friends in that list, I also include you, dear readers. And so begins this experiment in crowd-sourced inspiration, looking forward to working with you all, see you next week.
