Cosplay Updates – What I’m doing right now

Today is just a short post to explain where I am with my costumes and what else I’m up to in the realm of cosplay. From conventions and events, to meetups and general parading around the place, these are the costumes I’m mostly working on throughout this year and what else I’m up to in between. Hey, I never said cosplay was quick!

Deku Link

The first costume that I’m still working on is the Deku Link costume. I’ve gone and ordered myself some new fabrics for the boots, the skirt (TUNIC, DAMN IT) and hat. The head is still in a process of me having to apply some expanding foam and then having to wait for a while before sanding it down. Honestly, this takes a very long time, so I won’t be surprised if it’s not ready until July (due to the lack of time I put on this). I may have to do something to speed this process up, or even consider an alternative route. On the plus side, expanding foam is really good and quite effective at getting a large shape in barely any time… It’s just the sanding process which is taking hours on end.

Perhaps I should make all of the little pieces in the interim? Hmm.

Apollo Justice

Polly is a character that dresses rather well. Having said that, whilst I’m still on my weight loss excursion, I would like to leave making the suit ’til much later. In the mean time, I should look into making the shoes. I’ll need some nice black leather, stretch cotton for the insides and the cork insoles that I’ve been working on. I’ll probably opt for pleather instead of leather due to the cost… But I’d consider real leather if it makes things last better. I’ll also need to get a pair of shoe lasts (I’m going to buy one rather than make one. These are just used to heat the shoe into shape).

I’ve already bought all of the materials for the suit and I will begin making it soon by making the trousers. I’ve bought myself some sewing patterns (Burda style 6933), been using my sewing machine from time to time (just as practice) and I think I’ll be ready to make the trousers very soon! Now, what about the rest of that costume… Hmm…

Edward Elric

Wait, him again?!

Because of all of the conventions and events I go to, also because of all of the meetups I do where I go in cosplay, I figured it was time to work on Edward once more. I’m going to remake the whole arm out of craft foam, so it won’t be so painful for people to shake my hand at the very least. It should also look a lot cleaner. I’m going to try and get this done by early June at latest, as I’d like to wear this costume out to the next GeekOut meetup.

I’ll also need to figure out what to do with the wig, as it’s kind of a mess right now. It might be time that I get a new mannequin head, or even another wig to replace the current one, as it went to a right mess the last time I wore it.

“Oskar”

I see you waiting over there, oh face of true evil

I will be making more bits and bobs to go onto Oskar. Foam is a great material which I can’t wait to work with more. As well as the typical Oskar stuff (his robes, his mask, etc) I’ll be working on his skull Pauldron very soon.

Oh, I also love to attend Bristol Pride. It’s always fun to see people out and about with colours galore. So, good old Oskar is going to get a pride treatment. Now, time to go get some white robes and a DIY tie dye kit.

What do you have upcoming for your costumes? Do you have any events on the way and want to know where to begin? Let us know your thoughts and let me know if you know of anything I should look into before making any of the above things! As always, thanks for reading. • Pictures of the costume should start making its way on the site within the next month :)! Looking forward to finishing it. I hope to enter it into a cosplay masquerade as it’s 100% home made.

  2. I’d been wondering how you were getting on with Deku Link. I’m looking forward to seeing the pictures. Good luck with all that sanding; cosplay definitely isn’t quick but I’m sure it’ll be worth it in the end! (BTW did you see that I finished Slipstream?)
